Student Posters Competition - Winner Announced!
NGIA is delighted to announce the winner of the first ever student poster competition at NGI National Conference. First prize was awarded to Kirsten Raynor from the University of Melbourne. Her poster was titled ‘Bottom ash as a green roof substrate’ and evaluated ash waste from burning black coal as a growing media component in green roof substrates.
Kirsten says: “Having the opportunity to communicate research directly to industry participants was rewarding in itself”, and was appreciative of the experience. For submitting the winning poster, Kirsten was awarded a certificate and NGIA training voucher to be redeemed at future industry workshops.
The competition itself was a resounding success. Nine posters were submitted by TAFE and University students from across the country.
Each poster was judged during the conference by Anthony Kachenko (NGIA Environmental & Technical Policy Manager), Robert Chin (VIC Industry Development Officer) and Megan Connelly (NT Technical Officer). All judges unanimously agreed that the caliber of posters was exceptionally high, which reflects the high standards of Australia’s horticultural educators, not to mention the talented up and coming students that will be our industry leaders in the not too distant future.
Rhonda Lang, Lecturer at TAFE NSW Western Institute had students prepare posters and says “It was a great experience for our students and a chance to become involved in our industry body, as well as recognition for our young and future industry participants”.
The success of this initiative will see it continue at the next NGI National conference in 2012.
