NGIA Award of Merit

John McDonald

John has been involved with the Nursery Industry for over 15 years as Industry Development Manager for Nursery and Garden Queensland. In this role John has been of assistance to growers throughout Queensland and also the Northern Territory.

In addition to the normal role requirements of Industry Development John has undertaken the lead role in developing two key programs for the benefit of growers throughout Australia. These are EcoHort and Biosecure HACCP which when combined with NIASA comprise the industry Farm Management Systems.

As part of the vision and drive to develop the Biosecure program John has been appointed as the NGI technical representative for the Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed. This work is unseen by the industry but is absolutely critical to the well being and smooth operation of our industry, as any pest incursion that occurs for any crop will usually involve nursery crops as a potential host. This involves hours of research and teleconferences with Canberra and State agencies. All conducted under strict rules of confidentiality.

John has a forthright manner and strongly supports what he believes is right and of benefit to the industry. It is this characteristic that sees him respected in Canberra if not with other State agencies.
